Tape, anyone!?

Just this past weekend some students and I participated in Tucson Open Studios tour at the school. To help past the time, besides watching some choice movies and eating a ton of super healthy food, we painted a few murals. The murals ranged from 4' x 8' to 4' x 4' sheets of plywood and all done in acrylics and basic house paint. Here were mine award winning contributions.... I still don't know what "derp" means, but the students really love that word.

Some more figure studies...

Painted in oil, these were each 20 min studies from a live model. Speed painting is fun. I am starting to love Raw Sienna. LOVE!

The Sleepy-Time Monkey Returns

One of my colleagues presented our students with a very cool opportunity for some public art downtown. But there was one spot unfilled - so I jumped on it. I had always wanted to create public art, but what do I paint and share with my community? What pressure! Saddled with the responsibility of the greater good, I wanted to share something profound and honest that would hopefully compel all of us to be better… So of course the one thing I thought of was that weird Sleepy-Time Monkey doll. Those eyes… it is judging all of us.

Knowing these murals will probably get graffitied or worse, I thought it would be interesting if I left a spot for someone to write something. Honestly, I really didn’t know how to finish the mural so I am hoping someone else will finish it for me and relieve me of my public art burden. The murals will be up for at least another month so we will see what happens.

All the mural panels are on 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood and ours were done with house paint. They are located lining the north side of Tool Ave just East of Stone.

Portrait-A-Day-Again...

Well it's really like a portrait every day and a half. Whatever that means..... Here are the first 9. I am shooting for twenty. They're on 8" x 10" canvas boards and all done in oil. I am averaging around two hours for each. And by the looks of things I should probably put in some more time.

Sorry for the poor photos. They were taken on my child safe camera phone.

Phil Collins is a decent drummer...

So I am reminded often that I really never post anything… I guess I am just a bad blogger. Maybe I can take a course in blogging or read a blogging inspirational book. Hopefully that information is not on a blog. I might never see it then.

Nevertheless, here is my first post of 2012 - a recent class demo of egg tempera. It’s tiny, only being 5”x5”. That sleepy time monkey doll really weirds me out. I must keep painting it.
